Our team are fully trained to handle every type of issue you may have, whether it involves a roof repair, a roof leak, roof restoration or a full roof replacement that's needed.
Depending on the type of Sydney roof you have, the environmental impact and the condition it is kept in, most residential and commercial roofs should last from 20 years up to 50 and even 70 years in some cases. But no matter what, at some stage, every roof will have irreparable wear and tear and will need to be ultimately replaced with a new roof.
The first step to understanding the expected lifespan of your roof is to get a complimentary roof inspection Sydney analysis done. These should be conducted regularly (ideally on an annual basis by qualified and experienced contractors specialising in roof repairs. Not only will a Roofer be able to conduct the inspection thoroughly, it's also not safe to go up on a roof unless you really know what you are doing. As some roofs can be quite old, gutters, tiles and shingles can break easily when weight is placed on them. Even more importantly, the sharp pitches of some roofs will make it a potential hazard to get up there without falling.
The roof inspection will tell us what the current condition of the roof is and if there are any tell tale signs of repair needed.
The most common indication that a roof is experiencing damage is that there are tiles or shingles that are missing or broken. These need to be replaced as soon as possible to avoid roof leaks and potential flooding. A less obvious sign is that there are discolouration marks indicating either there is some damage caused by extreme weather (wind, hail, excessive sun). Over time, some rot and decay is to be expected but when we see mould, mildew or fungus forming, it means that the protective outer layer of the roof is being compromised.
On a metal roof, we typically notice that nails are missing causing the roof sheets to start to lift up. Corrosion is also a common sign that the roofing system is deteriorating.
In our inspections, we thoroughly check for other common problems such as curling at the edges of the tiles/shingles and cracks appearing in the bedding.
Unfortunately not all roofs systems have been properly installed, and often see inadequate Roof Flashing. Flashing is a thin membrane covering made of rubber or metal which helps to stop water from entering into roof holes that have been made to install skylights, high position windows, vents or chimneys. During a roof inspection we can check to see if the flashing in these areas have been sealed properly or if they are even there. Without adequate flashing on a roof, water can easily go through these holes and create a roof leak.
When we conduct a roof repair, we not only do an inspection of the roof, but we also look inside the house to see if there are other visible signs of potential problems such as water discolouration marks on ceilings and walls, build up of moisture in the house or potential sunlight from openings.
As one of the best roof repairs Sydney contractors, we provide a thorough report with honest recommendations so that you know the real state of your roof. Broken Tiles
Roof Tiles or Shingles act as an outer layer protection for your roof underlayment. When they are broken it means that the roof is no longer watertight and will likely lead to a leaky roof. Broken tiles and shingles typically occur when heavy objects (trees, hail stones, people) land on it, cracking the surface. An even more common reason for seeing broken tiles is due to the fact that the roof has aged and the original protective coating on the tiles have worn off, making them dry and brittle. Remember roof tiles and shingles have a shelf life and must be replaced at some point.
Please note that we do not recommend using silicon to glue broken tiles back as the aging surface of the tile may not be solid enough for the silicon to hold on to it.
Roof Flashing needs repair
Leaks caused by damaged or inadequate flashing needs to be looked at by a professional as the roof repair work can be quite tricky, requiring expertise and the right tools. Like tiles and shingles, flashings need to be replaced at some point as the flashing sealant can corrode when exposed to rough weather conditions. The seriousness of this means will only recommend using qualified Sydney roofers to do the job of roof repair.
Poorly Installed Skylights
Roof Leaks coming from the skylight is usually caused by poor installation in the first place. Skylights need to be fitted correctly and the flashing seal done properly to create a water resistant barrier. Sometimes we may not see direct leaks however condensation and moisture on skylights is often a bad sign that the window seals have not been installed correctly. If this is the case then moisture stains will likely also be present on the ceiling and walls inside the house where the skylights are.
Blocked Gutters and Roof Valleys
Whilst Sydney is a beautiful city with many trees lining our suburbs, often leaves, branches and other debris can easily clog up our roofs. Water is meant to run down the valley of the roof (the v shaped metal channel on the roof) but when the roof valley is blocked by material, it causes water to pool together and seep under the sealed cavity instead of flowing down the valley as it should. Roofs and gutters that are blocked will also cause water to pool on the roof, forcing extra pressure on the tiles or creating problems for the down pipe. Eventually this will lead to water leaks inside the house or create problems with the foundation of the building. Roof cleaning is an essential part of maintaining the healthy condition of your roof and shouldn't be neglected.
Roof needs Repointing and rebedding
A common problem with older tiled roofs is that the Ridge capping or bedding may need replacing. The ridge may need to be repointed if the capping feels loose otherwise rain can easily seep into the gaps or strong weather conditions can even blow the ridge off. Replacing the bedding is required when both the capping and bedding are weak or broken. As we inspect the roof , we can identify either of these problems by checking if there are water marks left inside the capping. The process of rebedding and repointing will provide a great deal of strength and protection like a new roof.
Roof repair problems are usually the result of months if not years of conditions where the roof system has been under pressure but nothing has been done about it. This is evident if you look at the source of the roof leaks you will often find rotting timber in the cavities that look like they have been buckled and damaged badly as well as dried cracked adhesives from the roof above. Often times we will see exposed nails on the roof bed which is a potential entry point for rain over time.
Once the roof has started leaking, the response time becomes very important. The chances of damaging the home inside and having an even greater damaged roof increases once the leaking roof has started. Bear in mind, there is always the threat of heavy rainfall which makes roof repair difficult at that time. We advise our customers to try and follow 4 basic steps in a roof leak. They are; to identify the area that is causing the roof leak, catch as much water running off this area as possible, relocate household items that can be damaged by the water and of course call our Sydney roof repairs team to come in quickly to repair your leaking roof.
A high powered pressure washer will help to clean your tiles and gutters. Cleaning your roof regularly will identify and help eliminate a lot of future problems and combined with a roof restoration service, the results can almost make it look like a new roof.
Skylights that have been incorrectly installed can require a lot of work to fix up. Often by properly applying flashing to the the skylight, it can also help with roof repairs.
Damaged roofs are usually caused by neglect and decay over a period of time. When roofs are not maintained, mould and rot can set in, warping your roof and leading to wear and tear.
Roof cleaning with a high pressure hose should be done by a professional due to the risk of accidents and to ensure you are getting the job done properly.
Prior to our arrival to do your roof repair, we recommend you identify the source of the leaking roof.
Look for signs of damage in the ceiling. Water will typically create a curve or show a water stain/discolouration.
Grab a bucket to catch the dripping. Use an old tea towel to stop the noise.
Next get as much water as possible from the source of the roof leaks. As unusual a step as it may seem, get a screwdriver and poke a hole in the ceiling to allow the water to drain.
To avoid further damage to furniture and other household items, relocate them elsewhere. If possible, place plastic covering over floors and carpets.
Sometimes a roof repair issue is very difficult to isolate. Often the trail of water is so long that the source of the hole is hard to find. By using a company like Sydney Roof Repairs, you are using a trusted trade professional who will properly check your roof and gutters and assess the cause.

Metal Roof
Metal roofs are also commonly referred to as Tin Roofs and are very popular due to the lower cost, ease of installation and the ability to match colours and finishes to your taste. Colourbond roofs have been designed for Australian weather conditions and are an practical and economical option.
Tiled Roof
The two most common tiled roofs are concrete and terracotta (clay) tiles. Both are long lasting, fire resistant, durable and UV resistant. Concrete does tend to absorb more water than terracotta and has a shorter lifespan but both make excellent coverings.
Shingle Roof
Shingle roofs are good, low cost, low maintenance roof options that will need replacing in about 20 years. They are popular due to their cost to install and also to replace but tend to less effective in strong weather conditions. They are also unsuitable for flat roofs as they are more exposed than pitched roofs to the elements.
Slate Roof
As the most premium option, slate roofs are made from natural stone and are highly durable. Because it does not absorb much water, Slate is not very easy to break in cold conditions. They are very heavy and can even handle hail and other heavy debris. As it is fire proof, it is ideal also in high bushfire risk areas. Beautiful and strong, slate roofs can last up to 100 years.
